Most states (except California) require documentation of certification from an acceptable certification agency. This contact should be made as early as possible after the location decision has been made. If a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) plans to locate in a state with licensure, that state should be contacted for specific information relative to that state’s laboratory practice act. The components of the law vary state-to-state, but usually includes an annual licensing fee (some are bi-annual), a provision for continuing education, a minimum education and professional competency requirements. There are currently 10 states with laboratory personnel licensure (California, Hawaii, Florida, New York, North Dakota, Tennessee, Louisiana, Nevada, West Virginia, and Montana). AMT has various items available that can be used to help celebrate and promote AMT for each of the recognition weeks.

I'm looking forward to going, how about you? Another event that is coming up is Phlebotomy Recognition Week from February 13-17. This is to unify our profession and also to have a common voice for advocacy. And for us (formerly known as) Medical Technologists, you most likely saw that we are now calling ourselves Medical Laboratory Scientists-MLS, as of last fall. We're looking forward to the new things we can do and be in 2023. It's hard to believe another year is behind us, and that we already have a whole new year ahead of us!
